After hitting the Gold Coast’s 2018 Commonwealth Games bid for a home-run last year, the CEO of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation Mark Peters has focused his attention on hitting his own on the Surfers Paradise Baseball Club diamond at the Pan Pacific Masters Games (3 – 11 November) this week.
Batter up for the man behind one of the largest sporting events to be held in the world in six year’s time with his intention this week to catch up with old friends and enjoy the spirit of the Pan Pacific Masters Games.
“Obviously because of the Commonwealth Games bid I moved up to the Gold Coast a couple of years ago,” said Mark.
“Then for these Pan Pacific Masters Games, I called up the Surfers Paradise Baseball Club and asked if any of the old boys were going to give it a go and they said they were and it all started from there.
“For me it was a chance to catch up with guys from all over Australia that I’ve played with before and it’s a fun team to be a part of.”
The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games is expected to attract more than 70,000 people from 71 different countries to the Gold Coast over 11 days of sport and Mark said the Pan Pacific Masters Games was a great example of how the Gold Coast can handle large multi-sport events.
“The Pan Pacific Masters Games has been great and the organisation of the event is fantastic,” said Mark.
“I think we have a great record on the Gold Coast with events overall.
“For the amount of people at the Pan Pacific Masters Games and other events such as the Gold Coast Airport Marathon it’s a great lead into the Games in 2018 which will be sensational.”
Mark is currently nursing an achillies injury he suffered in the lead up to the Games but the team has kept his spirits high with plenty of laughs.
“The achillies is pretty sore but there’s enough laughs to overcome the pain,” said Mark.
“We played on Saturday and unfortunately we went down but we gave it a good shot and had some good fun.
“We now have six days playing in a row so we’re hoping we’ll have enough players left for day seven.”
