Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games ambassador and marathon running legend Pat Carroll proved his ability to match it with younger athletes when he crossed the run, swim, run fitness challenge event in first place this morning at the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre.
Pat was invited to join the 30 – 34 age category event which involved a 2.5 kilometre run around the Luke Harrop cycling circuit, 300 metre swim in the Sports Super Centre pool followed by another 2.5 kilometre run.
Trailing in second position after the first 2.5 kilometre run, Pat gained ground on the leader in the swim leg and held on all the way to the finish.
Gympie local Adam Cross, who crossed the line in second place, was thrilled to have the opportunity to compete against the four-time Gold Coast Airport Marathon winner.
“It was a great experience to compete against a running legend,” Adam said.
“I thought I might have had a chance. I beat him in the first run but I’m like a rock when it comes to swimming and he overtook me.”
Adam didn’t mind being beaten by a man 20 years his senior.
“When it is someone like Pat Carroll, it’s totally acceptable,” said Adam.
