The Papua New Guinea Island Strikers dominated the Test Eagles in an intense match today at the Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games (JPPMG) at the Runaway Bay Indoor Stadium.

The team from New Guinea consisted of 13 male and female players over the age of 30, a number of whom having played for the national Papua New Guinea soccer team.

Striker Diana Tasion said this was the team’s first masters games and their first futsal experience, and they had been continuing to play play soccer in social groups back home.

She said the team is enjoying the games.

“Part of this is an adventure,” Diana said.

“The first game is (a) trial and error!”

The match finished in a 4-2 victory for the Island Strikers, despite a powerful fly goalkeeper in the Test Eagles, creating an intense competition for the Strikers.

Goalkeeper for the Test Eagles, Derek Robinson, managed to score an outstanding goal for his team when he launched the ball from his side of the court, straight into the goal of the Island Strikers.

Derek, from the Sunshine Coast, said the Test Eagles hadn’t played all together for five years, but he was still enjoying the event despite the loss.

“The whole attitude is right,” he said.

The futsal action continues at the JPPMG until Sunday 6 November.
