Two Olympic gold medallists and a three-time Commonwealth Games representative were unveiled as ambassadors for the 8th Pan Pacific Masters Games (3 – 11 November) today by Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey.
Ms Stuckey announced five-time beach volleyball Olympian and gold medallist Natalie Cook, Olympic and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Glynis Nunn-Cearns and three-time Commonwealth Games representative Pat Carroll as ambassadors at the official launch today which was proceeded by a beach volleyball challenge at Broadbeach.
“It is exciting to have these three Australian sporting legends take part at this year’s Pan Pacific Masters Games as they encourage and inspire others to be part of the action and entertainment of this great Gold Coast event,” said Ms Stuckey.
“They have represented our country on the world sporting stage and epitomise the competitive and fun spirit that the Pan Pacific Masters Games is renowned for.
“The Pan Pacific Masters Games continues to show why it is has stamped itself on the calendar of major events for Queensland with the appointment of world-class ambassadors.”
After recently representing Australia for the fifth time at the London Olympic Games, Natalie Cook is looking forward to having fun and competing at the Pan Pacific Masters Games in Beach Volleyball.
The 2000 Sydney Olympic Games gold medallist and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games bronze medallist will team up with former AFL star and now breakfast radio presenter on 92.5 Gold FM Peter ‘Spida’ Everitt in the mixed pairs competition.
Former heptathlete Glynis Nunn-Cearns, who won gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games as well as bronze at the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games in the 100m hurdles, will compete in the Athletics 300m Hurdles.
While four-time winner of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon and arguably Australia’s most versatile distance runner Pat Carroll will race in the inaugural Beach Mile event along the beautiful Kurrawa Beach.
Chairman of Events Queensland Gold Coast Kerry Watson said the announcement of the ambassadors will add great excitement around the Pan Pacific Masters Games this year.
“We are absolutely delighted to welcome these ambassadors to help promote the Pan Pacific Masters Games across nine days of competition and entertainment,” said Mr Watson.
“Natalie Cook, Glynis Nunn-Cearns and Pat Carroll have done Australia proud in their respective sporting careers and everyone involved during the Games will be thrilled to see them in action.”
The 8th Pan Pacific Masters Games will be held from 3 – 11 November on the Gold Coast.
The Pan Pacific Masters Games have no qualifying standards except that competitors must meet the minimum age requirement for their respective sport, which for the majority is 30 years of age.
