The lawn bowls competition kicked off this morning with greens opening for both international and interstate guests for practice.

Many took the opportunity to test out the first class greens at Southport Bowls Club including teams from Adelaide, Sydney, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

Best friends Stella McFarlane and Joan Woodford have travelled from Sydney and Coffs Harbour respectively to compete in both the lawn bowls and the indoor netball competition.

Travelling with a touring group of 24 fellow bowlers and netballers, Stella and Joan are looking forward to at least six days of competition.

“We have been best friends for well over 50 years now,” explained Stella.

“We’ve been through squash, netball, tennis and now lawn bowls together.”

Both seasoned masters competitors these two ladies are going to be a force to be reckoned with when they come together to contest the ladies pairs on Sunday.

With a 13 year history of playing bowls together these two ladies will be the team to watch.

Official competition begins tomorrow at Southport Bowls Club starting with the mixed pairs hitting the green at 8:30am.
