Mike Neville

South African Fitness Challenge competitor, Mike Neville, is stronger now than he’s ever been in his life – just ask his wife.

Mrs Neville attributes part of her husband’s success to the sport’s supportive community, “Any level whether you’re coming last, first or whatever, everyone gets behind you”, said Mrs Neville.

A Gold Coast resident since 2001, Neville found himself searching for a fitness program outside of the gym.

“My wife and I were in Broadbeach and we walked past a group of people doing these routines in the park and I said “That’s what I’ve been looking for”. He’s been hooked ever since.

3 years on and the impact the sport has had on his personal fitness, health and well-being continues to grow.

Originally a long-distance runner back in South Africa, Neville ‘fell to pieces’ after running the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in 2003.

“Strength has come back in the knees and all the aches and pains have disappeared”, the 60 year old said after smashing his previous personal best in the snatch by over 10kg with an impressive 47.5kg.

While there are no plans yet for competition in the future, the Nevilles were impressed with the Fitness Challenge’s debut at this year’s games, praising its organisation and happy atmosphere.

Neville finished by explaining,

“We’re not really party people but we might go and have a cackle at others having a great time”.
