Gold Coast father-of-two Warren Bray hasn’t had a hit in 30 years but is ready to get back in the swing of things at squash as part of the Pan Pacific Masters Games.

The 48-year-old from Coomera (QLD) entered the games at the last minute after his partner inspired him to rediscover his love for the sport.

“Tammy has been battling cancer and is in the recovery phase at the moment,” Warren said.

“Despite her condition, she’s returned to an active lifestyle and is currently competing in cross country at the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games in WA.

“I thought to myself, if Tammy can start running again, then why can’t I get back on the squash court and give it another go?”

“I’m seeded last, but I reckon if I give it a crack I might be able to play like I did thirty years ago.”

The Gold Coast dad-of-two is playing to do his family proud

Warren found his passion for the sport in his junior years while playing at state competitions.

“In the football off-season, I started playing squash with my sister then began competing after I found a great coach,” he said.

“When I joined the military, however, I stopped playing the sport I loved but now I’m back to give it another go.

“I’ve pulled out my old racquet and bought a new grip – I’m making a comeback!”

Even though he is no longer as competitive as he was in his youth, Warren is still looking to push himself at these games while enjoying the friendly spirit and doing his family proud.

“The great thing about the Pan Pacs is enjoying the social side of sport with a bunch of competitors the same age,” he said.

The squash courts used in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games were relocated from Oxenford to Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium for the Pan Pacific Masters Games.

“Hopefully playing on the same courts as the world’s best will give me some good vibes and good luck!”
