As day five of the Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games (JPPMG) rolls over, the temperature has risen and so has the chance of injury.

If your muscles are aching and you’re feeling a little low, the masters games medics have some advice for you. John and Paul are the first aid officers at the games’ softball venue – which boasts the biggest number of participants (1777).

So here are some tips to keep masters games athletes at their best.

“Stay hydrated and listen to your body and the advice you’re given,” John said.

Being prepared for the day ahead is also going to help prevent injury and improve performance. As for those participants who are making a comeback after a few years off, more preparation is necessary.

“Some teams over time become more prepared and understand that looking after their bodies is important,” Paul said.

“Various teams have a member who assists with medical needs such as recovery in ice baths, strapping injuries and helping stretch the participants.

“We enjoy doing this job. We admire what they do and how they give it a crack. We just want them to stay fit and healthy to enjoy the games as much as possible.”

With this in mind, the top five tips for ensuring that everybody stays healthy are:

  1. Stay hydrated
  2. Stay on top of injuries
  3. Stretch before, potentially during and after the event
  4. Ice problem areas
  5. Strap problem or potential problem areas

Also, continue enjoying the games, have fun and look after yourself to make the most of this year’s JPPMG.

The 10th biennial Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games is being held 5 – 13 November 2016 on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.

The event showcases competition in 43 sports and is hosting 13,000 participants from Queensland, interstate and overseas.
