Two lifelong friends, an Australian champion and an enthusiastic stud have banded together to claim the underdog position at this year’s mixed fours lawn bowls.

The team may have a unique origin, but the foursome is causing a stir at the lawn bowls competition.

Original members Margaret Watson and June Gregory scouted one of Australia’s best wheelchair athletes along with Zac Hapeta to form the team.

Margaret believed Zac was a perfect fit for the team, although they compromised their criteria for him.

“We put a notice on the net asking for a good looking guy and we got Zac!” she jokes.

Also joining the team is the newcomer to watch, wheelchair champion, Darryl Wilson.

Wilson has competed on the South Australia wheelchair side for the last eight years and is currently preparing for his second world championship in New Zealand next year.

Although today may have been the first day the team has played together, they enjoyed quality bonding opportunities at the opening night.

“We went to the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday night when Ian Moss was on. That was a night and a half, it was a great night,” Margaret said.

“As you walked in it was spectacular, with all the balloons and everyone was dressed in costume, it was just a magical kind of atmosphere,” June said.

The fours mixed lawn bowls continues tomorrow. For more information go to www.mastersgames.com.au
