Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Jann Stuckey says the 8th Pan Pacific Masters Games to be held in November will strengthen Queensland’s reputation as a premier destination for major events.
Ms Stuckey officially launched the Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast today.
“Outside the World Masters Games, the Pan Pacs are the largest Masters Games in the world and interest in this year’s event is at an all-time high,” Ms Stuckey said.
“Organisers are expecting to re-write the record books with more than 12,000 competitors, from close to 20 countries due to compete on the Gold Coast.
“Events like this provide support to the Queensland tourism industry, while also promoting an active and healthy lifestyle – engaging participants from 25 years to 90 years old.
Minister Stuckey also announced that Qantas had signed on as an official sponsor of the 2012 event.
“Following the return of Qantas to the Gold Coast from 28 October this year, I am pleased to be able to welcome it as the Official Airline of the Pan Pacific Masters Games,” she said.
Queensland’s history of hosting major Masters sporting events dates back to the 1990s when Brisbane delivered the 1994 World Masters Games – leading to the establishment of the Queensland Masters Games in 1996, and the first Pan Pacific Master Games in 1998.
“Interest in Masters sporting events continues to grow on an international scale, with the 2012 Pan Pacific Masters Games hosting more than 450 competitors from New Zealand, over 200 from Papua New Guinea and a further 200 from around the world,” she said.
“The Newman Government is proud to support the Pan Pacific Masters Games through Events Queensland Gold Coast, as part of a growing calendar of events for the region.
“The Pan Pacific Masters Games will help us reach our target to double overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020.”
There are 39 sports in the 2012 Pan Pacific Masters Games program including five new additions – AFL 9s, Athletics Beach Mile, Calisthenics, Cycling and Outrigger Canoeing.
The Pan Pacific Masters Games will also feature a nightly entertainment program at the Games Village, Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre. Headline acts include Brian Cadd, Jim Keays & Russell Morris (Saturday 3 November), The Black Sorrows (Wednesday 7 November) and Jon Stevens (Friday 9 November).
The 8th Pan Pacific Masters Games will be held from 3 – 11 November.
