Queensland’s Gold Coast is on track to host another massive Pan Pacific Masters Games from 3 – 11 November as registrations flow in at record pace.

More than 11,000 participants from 26 countries took part at the previous biennial event in 2010 with similar numbers expected to converge on the Gold Coast this year for Queensland’s largest multi-sport event.

After the first week of entries, the total number of registrations had almost tripled 2010’s first-week figures with baseball and softball the two most popular sports so far.

Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, The Hon. Jann Stuckey MP, said plans were well underway for another successful Pan Pacific Masters Games in November.

“The Newman Government is pleased to support the Pan Pacific Masters Games through Events Queensland,” said Ms Stuckey.

“The event attracts nearly half of its participants from interstate and overseas providing another great boost for tourism in Queensland.

“Tourism is a vital part of the Newman Government’s four pillar approach to boost Queensland’s economy.

“Events like the Pan Pacific Masters Games contribute to making Queensland Australia’s number one tourist destination.”

Ms Stuckey said the event, now in its eighth edition, was a great way of engaging people of all ages in healthy and active lifestyles.

“The Pan Pacific Masters Games is generally for people aged 30 and above, and it is great to see so many people of all ages involved in sport.

“It is also important that the Pan Pacs have a good mix of both sport and entertainment so participants can play sport through the day and enjoy a variety of entertainment at the Games Village at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre each night.”

This year’s sports program lists 41 sports including eight new sports (AFL 9s, Beach Mile, Beach Netball, Beach Touch, Calisthenics, Outrigger Canoeing, Volleyball and Cycling).

The first person to register for the Pan Pacific Masters Games this year was Mr Nigel Inglis from Brisbane who is set to compete in cycling. Already registrations have been received from around Australia and also from New Zealand, USA, China and Japan.

Entries for the Pan Pacific Masters Games are open at www.mastersgames.com.au – early bird entries close on Friday 31 August.
