Gold Coast cycling identity Sara Carrigan says she is excited about the return of Road Cycling to the Pan Pacific Masters Games (4-13 November) sport program in 2022 after an eight-year hiatus.
The Athens 2004 Olympic Games Road Race gold medallist says the reintroduction of the sport on a closed road circuit on the Woongoolba cane fields from 10-13 November is a welcome rarity.
“It’s tricky finding somewhere for a closed road circuit these days, but the Pan Pacs team have been able to organise it and the local and wider cycling communities are over the moon,” the Sara Carrigan Cycling principal said.
“These circuits don’t exist like they once did, so to race on a road free of other traffic is something we all relish when it happens.
“The other great thing is that our Masters can compete in a range of different events over the four days as individuals or with some friends in the pairs and other events.
“It’s a key attraction – being able to do one event or do the tour.
“And with varying distances, there really is an event for everyone over 30 years of age,” she said.
The 2022 Road Cycling schedule comprises the 20km Individual Time Trial, 15km Pairs Time Trial, Criteriums and the Road Races with the sport coming back into the 44-sport program alongside newcomers Pickleball and DanceSport.
