A nine-year-old world mark fell in the very first indoor rowing race at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre this morning.
90-year-old Philip Price from Torquay, Victoria set a new mark in the 2000m men’s 90-94 lightweight event, lowering the old record by a second to flash across the line in 8.43.06.
“It was unexpected because I haven’t been doing too well lately, so I’m quite surprised; I just hit my straps at the right time.
“My wife Hazel and I have come up every time for the past three Games – nice food, nice climate, nice rowing,” he said.
And with Philip hardly blowing out a candle at the end of his race, there’s still the promise of more to come with him lining up in 500m this afternoon and three races tomorrow.
