Today marked the beginning of the fitness challenge at the Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games as hundreds of competitors warmed up for a big weekend at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

Fitness challenge consists of a variety of workouts as participants are required to compete in all nine exercises to be eligible for medals.

Incorporating exercises familiar to most CrossFit athletes, competitors are ranked on their fitness levels in challenges such as ‘water muscle ups’, ‘deadlifts’ and ‘snatch’.

Will Edgar 33, from Yamba in New South Wales, kicked off the fitness challenge today lifting more than his body weight during the ‘snatch’ workout.

Will weighs in at 115kg and ‘snatched’ 135kg.

“I like the variety of the competition. There is a hell of a lot of stuff I am not good at but I enjoy the workouts that challenge me,” Will said.

Will placed third in the fitness challenge at the 2014 Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games and couldn’t resist coming back for more.

“I mainly compete and train as a CrossFit competitor, but I wasn’t the most athletic in high school. I was the ‘big’ guy not the ‘fit’ guy,” Will said.

“I train every day, seven days a week at the Clarence Valley CrossFit. For me training is around 90 minutes of work rotating every CrossFit movement and then finishing with mobility and recovery.

“I came back this year to have fun and compete in a fantastic experience.”

The fitness challenge continues until Sunday 13 November.

The 10th biennial Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games is being held 5 – 13 November 2016 on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.

The event showcases competition in 43 sports and is hosting 13,000 participants from Queensland, interstate and overseas.
