The ladies from the Golden Eagles may be from Papua New Guinea (PNG) but they are not strangers to the Gold Coast or the Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games.
The team compete together in a local hockey competition in PNG and have made several trips to Australia for various masters competitions since 2006.
Team captain Theresa Potuan stated the team has competed together for many years and admitted it was not only the competition that kept them coming back to the Gold Coast.
“Same people yes, we have the same team,” Theresa said.
“We play for the fun of it. We have made so many friends and we just love coming back.
“Gold Coast is like home for us. We catch up with everybody when we come back.”
Although the ladies are excited to catch up with their masters friends, they are also focused on their hockey competition, admitting they are waiting until after their competition to experience the entertainment at the Games Village.
“We will, after competition, we will be there.”
Victory at the Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games is not new for the PNG Golden Eagles.
“In 2008 we won the gold in the women’s 45+ competition and in 2010 we received the bronze here,” said Theresa.
“Fingers crossed, touch wood, yes we are hoping for a medal in the 50+.
“At least we get a medal and go home. We are not worried about gold. Whatever colour, we just want to get a medal.”
The hockey competition continues for the next six days at the Gold Coast Hockey Stadium.
