One of the oldest participants at this year’s Pan Pacific Masters Games (3 – 11 November) will be Gold Coast’s Dennis Fox who will prove age isn’t a barrier when he tees off at the age of 90.
The Sanctuary Cove Golf Club member recalls playing and winning his first golf competition more than 70 years ago and is excited to be making his long-awaited Pan Pacs debut after being inspired by a fellow golfer.
Golf will be one of the 39 sports on the program at this major biennial sporting event that is expected to attract in excess of 11,000 competitors to the Gold Coast.
“I’ve always wanted to play golf in a Masters Games. I read about an 80-year-old woman who had competed in golf at the 2010 Pan Pacs and I thought if she could play, than so could I,” said Dennis.
“I played my first golf tournament in 1939 at my school, Trinity Grammar, but was unable to continue playing because I worked in the Air Force from 1940 for five years.
“I didn’t really play much golf after the Air Force. I soon gave up my golf ambitions and began playing tennis at the age of 60.”
In 1995 Dennis decided to pick up his clubs again when a golf club opened close to his home in Sydney and he continued to pursue his passion when he made the move to the Gold Coast.
“While I lived in Sydney, the Terry Hills Golf Club was about to open and I thought it’d be a great opportunity to go and start playing again,” said Dennis.
“At that time I hadn’t played for around 30 years.
“I came to the Gold Coast about 10 years ago and have been playing at Sanctuary Cove ever since.”
Since playing on the Gold Coast, Dennis has proved that his age doesn’t impact his competitiveness after winning a couple of major club tournaments.
“Sanctuary Cove holds a tournament at the same time as the USA Masters and just like the tournament there, the winner receives a green jacket,” said Dennis.
“In 2009 I won the tournament which is definitely one of my favourite sporting moments.
“My friend and I were also lucky enough to win the Mike Gore Cup at Sanctuary Cove which was a knock out competition over six months. It was a handicap event and we were the oldest competitors but we still won.”
The new scheme was born here and filagra this is not anything that we would like to see. Caverta although better in some elements but not important for us.
