Thirty-seven sports have been confirmed for the 2014 Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast with organisers Events Management Queensland tipping that number to grow to a record 40+ sports over the coming weeks.

Australia’s largest biennial Masters Games will be held 1-9 November with the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre once again the Games Village.

Event chairman Kerry Watson said with just under one year to go, preparations are already well underway.

“We hosted a gathering of our sports convenors at the Southport Sharks AFL Club today and we simultaneously launched our brand new website www.mastersgames.com.au,” Mr Watson said.

“Enthusiasm is high and we are already focused on presenting a landmark Games next year for our 12,000+ participants,” he said.

The 2014 sports line up includes popular team sports such as netball, basketball, softball and baseball, individual pursuits such as athletics, judo, squash and swimming and several new sports.

Diving will be staged alongside water polo and swimming at the redeveloped Gold Coast Aquatic Centre and, for the first time, the Gold Coast program will host the fitness challenge, equestrian dressage, sailing and the cerebral sport of trivia.

Mr Watson also paid tribute to Pan Pacific Masters Games director Daphne Pirie MBE who will be inducted into the Queensland Sporting Hall of Fame at the 2013 Queensland Sport Awards in Brisbane on Monday 2nd December.

The former Australian hockey vice-captain and track and field legend will be recognised alongside Pan Pacific Masters Games sport convenors Kate Eggar and Jodie Watson who are finalists in the Queensland Sport Administrator category for their services to taekwondo and water polo respectively.

“Our Gold Coast Airport Marathon is also a finalist in the 2013 Queensland Sport Awards for Queensland Sport Event of the Year while Bill Chaffey who was second in the wheelchair marathon in 2012 and 2013 has been nominated in the Queensland Sport Athlete with a Disability category,” Mr Watson said.
