The word calisthenics is a Greek word that translates to beauty and strength.
And that is something the women at the first-ever calisthenics competition at a Pan Pacific Masters Games demonstrated on Thursday at the Gold Coast Arts Centre.
Adelaide’s Sharyn Richter, 35, said she was happy to have the sport finally introduced into the Pan Pacs.
“Not many people really know about calisthenics, so it’s nice to have it recognised and be joining in with everyone,” said Sharyn.
Sharyn has been competing in the sport since she was eight years of age.
She gave up the sport last year, but when it became part of the Pan Pacs program she got right back into it.
Today (Thursday) she was a lyrca-clad member of the Vintage Reds in the under 50 category. She said the team has become her family.
“It’s been mind blowing,” Sharyn said.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better trip, I had no idea that it was going to be as good as it’s been. It’s indescribable.”
Sharyn said she encourages girls to get into calisthenics as opposed more aggressive sports.
“Calisthenics is great.
“It’s one of those sports that teaches you discipline, posture, choreography. It also works your mind a lot because you have to be learning constantly,” she said.
The final day of calisthenics will be held on Friday at the Gold Coast Arts Centre from 9:00am – 7:00pm.
