Australian blind lawn bowling champion Dennis Wormald will aim to continue his form and claim a gold medal when he rolls at the 2016 Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games (JPPMG) on the Gold Coast from 4 to 13 November.
The 2015 Australian Open vision impaired men’s singles champion will compete in the men’s pairs, mixed pairs, mixed triples and mixed fours alongside more than 130 lawn bowlers aged 35 and above from every Australian state and territory at the Southport Bowls Club.
The 66-year-old former tennis player first took to the green in 1992 and quickly became one of the state’s best B4 category bowlers with the support of the Queensland Blind Bowlers Association (QBBA) and his local club, Narangba Bowls Club.
Dennis’ friends at the Musgrave Hills Bowls Club on the Gold Coast encouraged him to join them at the JPPMG to help maintain his form for the 2017 International Blind Bowls Association World Championships in Cape Town, South Africa.
“I am looking forward to it,” Dennis said.
“Lawn bowls is one of few sports in which anyone with a disability can participate alongside others.
“Having a disability doesn’t change what you can do.”
Dennis narrowly missed out on back-to-back national titles when he lost to the United Kingdom’s Carl Fountain at the 2016 Australian Open on the Gold Coast but is confident he can claim top honours in November.
No qualification is required to compete in lawn bowls at the 2016 Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games. Participants only have to meet the minimum age of 35 to take part and the competition will be divided into age groups ensuring the sport is played fairly and in tremendous spirit.
The world’s biggest and best biennial masters games will showcase competition in 44 team and individual sports and attract 13,000 participants from Queensland, interstate and overseas.
A jam-packed entertainment program during the event provides participants the opportunity to celebrate achievements, socialise with teammates, friends and family and enjoy the camaraderie for which the event is renowned.
Masters will be present both on and off the field when a swag of legendary Australian entertainers including former members of Daddy Cool and Rose Tattoo grace the stage as part of the live nightly program hosted by Jupiters Gold Coast and the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Jupiters Gold Coast, home of the Games Village, is located in Broadbeach and close to accommodation, shopping, restaurants, cafes, bars and the beach.
