Australian road cycling world champion and triple Tour de France green jersey winner Robbie McEwen was today announced as an ambassador for next week’s Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast.
The retired 46-year-old Gold Coast local and three-time Olympian will join over 15,000 athletes from around the world and compete in mountain bike and golf.
“The games provide the perfect opportunity to play against people your own age in a social setting on the beautiful Gold Coast,” Robbie said.
“I’m always asked if I would race in cycling again to which I say, ‘absolutely not’, but mountain biking and golf are different sports so I’m all for it.
“I love supporting events that bring the sport to the people and that’s the reason I entered. I’m not bothered if I don’t get a medal because it’s not about winning, it’s about taking part and having fun.”
Three-time Olympian Robbie McEwen will join over 15,000 athletes from around the world and compete in mountain bike and golf.
Robbie was motivated to be a part of the world’s biggest and best biennial masters games after commentating the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games mountain bike event held at the upgraded Nerang Mountain Bike Trails.
“I thought it would be fun to ride on home soil. I can put my bike in the back of the ute and my son can watch me race,” he said.
“I’ve never competed in enduro before, so I’m excited by the technicality of the timed downhill element because it’s so different to road cycling.”
Robbie said he enjoys playing golf with his mates and loves the challenge of playing a sport outside his comfort zone.
“I decided to enter golf with my team because while we’re not very good, we just love having a hit together!” he said.
The 11th biennial Pan Pacific Masters Games will be held 2 – 11 November 2018 on the beautiful Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.
The world’s biggest and best biennial masters games will showcase competition in over 40 team and individual sports and attract more than 15,000 participants from Queensland, interstate and overseas.
