Later this week the 8th Pan Pacific Masters Games (3 – 11 November) will get underway on the Gold Coast and organisers are adamant it will be the biggest and best in the event’s history.

The event is expecting a record-breaking number of competitors from Queensland, interstate and overseas to converge on the Gold Coast for nine days of competition and entertainment.

By close of entries, more than 12,000 competitors from close to 20 countries are anticipated to compete across 38 sports including a strong contingent from countries such as New Zealand and Papua New Guinea plus many more from Japan, Guam and the USA.

Interest has been at an all-time high this year particularly with the addition of four new sports on the program, the Athletics Beach Mile, Calisthenics, Cycling and Outrigger Canoeing.

The Pan Pacific Masters Games is regarded as Queensland’s largest multi-sport event and will showcase the athletic abilities of people as young as 25 years of age right up to their 90s.

The event is a celebration of masters competition and the Games Village at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre will be a chance for competitors to let their hair down after a big day of competition with eight huge nights of entertainment headlined by Brian Cadd, Russell Morris, Jim Keays, Jon Stevens and The Black Sorrows.

More than 1000 teams have entered in team sports with Softball having surpassed 1700 competitors with other team sports such as Football (Soccer) and Netball exceeding the 1000 milestone.

Athletics and Swimming are proving popular among the individual sports with more than 700 athletes combined having already entered.

Olympic and Commonwealth Games experience will be an advantage for close to 20 of this year’s competitors who have all represented their country on the prestigious sporting stage including this year’s ambassadors Natalie Cook, Glynis Nunn-Cearns and Pat Carroll.

The oldest competitor at this year’s Games will be Marcia Mancoun from Paddington in Queensland who will hit the Lawn Bowls green at the incredible age of 91, while the youngest athlete will be Elise Kho from Shailor Park in Queensland who is competing in Swimming at the age of 25.

Going the distance to be part of the Pan Pacific Masters Games is Mike Forder from Broadstone in the United Kingdom who will fly the most kilometres (16,770km) to compete in Indoor Rowing.

Calisthenics will be one of four new sports on the program and a large contingent of teams will travel from Victoria and South Australia to compete at the Gold Coast Arts Centre on Thursday 8 November and Friday 9 November.
