The Pan Pacific Masters Games have announced Cancer Council Queensland as the official charity of the premier multi-sport event which will be held on the Gold Coast from 1 – 9 November.

The announcement comes on the eve of Australia’s best known and most popular fundraising event, Daffodil Day (Friday 22 August), and will encourage more than 12,000 masters-aged participants, officials and supporters to raise awareness and donations to Queensland’s leading non-government community organisation in cancer control.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the partnership with the world’s largest biennial masters games was fitting, as Cancer Council Queensland encourages regular physical activity as a means of lowering the risk of cancer.

“The Pan Pacific Masters Games is an opportunity for people aged 30 and above to participate in their favourite sport with friends from the Australian and international masters community, while reducing the risk of preventable cancers,” Ms Clift said.

“Around 65 per cent of Queensland adults are overweight or obese, which is significantly higher than the national rate.

“We hope by reinforcing the message of physical activity to an audience at an event such as the Pan Pacific Masters Games, we can help improve these rates.

“We will be providing participants and their supporters with sunscreen at sporting venues and will also encourage them to raise awareness and funds for Cancer Council Queensland through various activities, including a theme night at the Games Village located at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.”

Events Management Queensland CEO Cameron Hart said the announcement was an exciting addition to this year’s event which promises to be the biggest and best in its history.

“We’re thrilled to have Cancer Council Queensland on board as the official charity of the Pan Pacific Masters Games which we view as an appropriate partnership due to the promotion of physical activity to more than 12,000 masters-aged athletes,” Mr Hart said.

“Our athletes are all committed to improving their lifestyle and well-being by participating across more than 40 sports and they are the ideal candidates to promote the message of physical activity to others outside the event with the assistance of Cancer Council Queensland.”
