LH-Football-Quarrymen

Monday 3 November

A drink in their hands and a smile on the face, veteran soccer team, the Quarryman, were ready to demonstrate to the other participants their 20 years worth of experience on and off the field.

Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games football team, the Quarryman from Christchurch, are bringing their kiwi spirit to the Gold Coast.

With an array of gold, silver and bronze medals at home, the team is familiar with dominating the field but their main concern is some old fashioned fun.

“We are hoping for a medal, but that’s not why we are here,” says team member Dave Withers.

“It’s a lot of fun, except none of the teams seem to drink this much!”

But between the beers and the banter, team member Tommy Kane said how important it is to be consistent in training and to keep the team as strong as possible.

“It’s hard to take it up when you’re older. You have to keep playing, like every week. We train year round and play on Saturdays in winter,” said Kane.

“It’s what you have to do. If you don’t keep moving, you lose it.”

When they’re not sharing advice or a beer, the team has been partying at the official entertainment.

Dave Withers said it has been an amazing experience despite their age.

“The entertainment has been great. We are considered on the quite senior side but  we had a very good night!” Dave said.

Football continues until Saturday 8 November.
